Why the Creation/Evolution Debate is so important

To many Christians, the creation/evolution argument may seem to be getting old, or, at the least, unimportant. They prefer instead to attack big controversial issues such as abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, etc. Christians know these ides are wrong, and I think so as well. However, I think the creation/evolution argument has an even greater importance in the Christian circle.

Many times when Christians are defending their viewpoint, they attack the controversial points with such statements as “It’s wrong because God says its wrong!” or “The Bible tells us to do it this way”. With the person who believes in Evolution, however, this bears no weight. Why not? Evolution gives us the origin of life without God. Without the truth of creation, Biblical foundations crumble. This is why the Creation/Evolution issue is so important.

The Basic Presuppositions of Creation and Evolution

The biggest and most hotly debated difference between the opposing views of Creation and Evolution is the origin of life. A Creationist on one hand, believes that God himself spoke all life into existence in a literal six-day week some 6000 years ago. The Creationist believes that this is the explanation of all the elaborate design that we observe in the universe. The Creationist believes that all the species were originally created; and that there are no ‘new’ species. The Creationist does however, allow for changes and mutations within a species, but not a species mutating or ‘evolving’ into another species.

Evolution, on the other hand, believes that the origin of life began either 14 billion, 28 billion, or 60 billion years ago, depending on who you talk to. The Evolutionist believes that the design we observe is a matter of generations upon generations of inbreeding, mutating, ‘evolving’ and natural selection. Although a certain variety of Evolution believes that God ‘ticked off’ the first spark of life, the majority of Evolutionists believe that there is no room for God in this view, hence the danger of it. The Evolutionist is merely a non-thinking individual, who does not provide a reasonable explanation for the elaborate and most complex design that we see all about us.
