A fixed point of reference is very important in today's society for several reasons.
1) To help one govern and discern between right and wrong.
2) To help us find truth.
3) To help us find god.
I think the most important reason is number 1. Imagine a society where no one, I mean no one, has the ability to discern between right and wrong. Imagine the chaos and confusion resulting from a society where everyone does what is right in his/her own eyes! What a frightening thought! As Mr. Paretti says in the video, "THE CHAIR", it's like a completely dark room with out any point of reference but a chair. One can then use the chair as a point of navigation, or "point of reference". But if one should move the chair, you would no longer know where you were and would be helpless. The same philosophy can be used in reference to our lives in this world. If we use God as our "point of reference" then we always know the truth regardless of what happens in our lives. However, if we remove our "point of reference" (God), then we have no direction and would be helpless in our lives. Mr. Paretti gives two guidelines for the "point of reference". They are:
1) It must be separate from you.
2) The point of reference can't move.
These are very important. For example if I said, "well, my point of reference is me", then I really have no real way of knowing whether I am right or wrong. After all, I could be dead wrong. But however, if I said "God is my point of reference", then I always have a source for the absolute truth, God's word, the Bible. If on the contrary, if I said "my point of reference is President Bush" that is really not fixed. For example, If President Bush said "abortion is perfectly ok" I would be forced to believe what he said and he could very well change his opinion, then my reference would not be immovable, thus making it worthless. A fixed point of reference is very important in today's society.
