I’ve Got Ubuntu!
Yup, I’ve got my hot little hands on a copy of the popular freebie Linux distribution, Ubuntu. The CD I’ve got is actually a live CD. Which means it can be run off the CD and it won’t screw up my computer at all. ‘Tis very cool. Unfortunately, the fact that it’s running of the CD severely limits the actual operability of the OS. Not to worry though, I’ve got the full version on its way in the mail.
Why Linux?
Ok, so, you’re asking yourself, why Linux? Isn’t that for people that hate Microsoft? In answer to your question, NO! It’s not for people who hate Microsoft. Linux is the under-the-hood OS. It’s for hackers. Ok; I just opened a can of worms. Half the people that read this blog are going, “uh oh, hacking… that’s bad news… you can get put away for that…” Those that know me know what’s coming next. Hacking is not illegal. Ok, not my hacking. Hacking is Linux. Hacking is the Open Source community that makes software and distributes if for free because they believe that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Hacking is BY DICTIONARY DEFINITION “creatively solving problems with a computer”. The term originated to refer to people who built their own computers out of parts. They “hacked” it together. Then, it started to be applied to what I use it for. Now; unfortunately, the popular definition is applied to people that do illegal things. Someone who is into computers. No, I didn’t say someone who can use them, someone who’s good at using them, someone who is seriously into them. It’s someone who goes to websites to see the design not the content. It’s someone that uses Firefox because the like it, for whatever reason, not because they hate Microsoft. It’s someone who, when they find out that they can make their cellphone run an obscure Unix based OS says, “Now that’s cool.” That’s a hacker. I’ve got more proof for the skeptics. See this doc. I didn’t write it, someone else did. It really dives into hacking and what it really is. Especially read the part about crackers. If you don’t read anything else, you have to read that part. It’s highlighted to stand out.
