The Declaration of Independence was the document that laid the groundwork for America's system of government. I think that the majority of American's today do not have any idea what the Declaration of Independence is really about. The declaration was important because it laid out in very clear terms exactly how the Patriots felt about their liberty. It is evident from the statements in the Declaration how much they treasured freedom. They realized that if the British were allowed to rule over them in such a tyrannical way, it would mean the loss of all their freedoms. The Declaration of Independence not only states the American's independence, it tells why they are declaring their independence.
As stated in the declaration itself, the Patriots were declaring their independence after a long period of trying to convince the British. The Patriots believed they had exhausted all peaceful methods of gaining independence. They were convinced that the War and the Declaration were the only methods still available to gain freedom.
In the declaration, a full twenty-five (25) paragraphs are devoted to listing the offenses of the British Crown. Concluding the twenty-five paragraphs of offenses of King George, there is a paragraph revealing the patriot's actions during all these offenses. They "have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms…" They also conclude that there petitions have "been answered only by repeated injury".
Upon careful examination of the offenses committed by King George, and the Patriot's motive, one can fully assume that the Revolutionary War was rightful and just. The Patriots, I believe, were not a short-tempered people. They had given King George plenty of time and had tried to do things nicely. After that, the only thing left to do, (although they didn't want to) was to declare their independence from the mother country.
In conclusion then, the Declaration of Independence was influential in our breaking with the mother country, and in forming out system of government.
