The most profound and marked effect that the Great Awakening had on America is the American Revolution. Historians and scholars alike both overwhelmingly agree that without the great awakening, there would have been no American Revolution. Consider this quote from America's Providential History. "Without the Great Awakening (1740-1760) there would have been no American Revolution (1760-1790)."1
During the Great Awakening, the Spirit of God moved in the hearts of the American Colonists. Whole townships were literally converted to God during the Great Awakening. The taverns and liquor stores shut down because of such a decrease in business. During the Great Awakening, universities and seminaries were established, and it was one of the most profitable periods in our nation's history for the clergy. The American Revolution as we know, is the product of thoughts and ideas. The preachers and sermons during the Great Awakening cultivated the thoughts and ideas that started with the books the colonists read. The fiery sermons preached during the Great Awakening were filled with the noise of liberty and freedom.
